Sami electronic artist iDJa announces the release of his new EP 'Klubbas' (meaning "in the club" in Sami).
The artist, whose real name is Markus Thonhaugen, has established himself as a prominent figure in the Sámi electronic music scene, performing at major Sámi festivals across Sápmi. The EP 'Klubbas' represents a significant milestone in iDJa's career, emerging from his bold decision to pursue music full-time. Following this commitment, he relocated to Berlin for a year of electronic music studies.
The EP opens with "Áhčis" ("From Father"), a track based on a traditional joik gifted to iDJa by his father 15 years ago. Despite the original recording's poor quality and obsolete format, modern AI technology enabled its restoration. The track incorporates percussion created from recorded sounds of traditional Sámi craftsmanship (duodji). The piece holds particular cultural significance, as receiving a joik is considered a great honor in Sami culture.
During his time in Berlin, iDJa experimented with various production techniques. Upon returning to Northern Norway, he conducted field recordings around his hometown, which feature prominently throughout the EP.
"Land Back" notably incorporates these elements, addressing industrial development in traditional Sámi territories. Attentive listeners will notice layered sounds of bark, pine cones, and stones throughout the EP, reflecting themes of humanity's growing disconnection from nature.
"Ária" features a collaboration with Adrian Angelico, an acclaimed Norwegian-Sami mezzo-soprano, creating a groundbreaking fusion of opera and hypnotic house music.
"Swedish Cocktail Groove" captures the ambient sounds of a small Swedish festival, while tracks like "Betrayal" explore personal themes of trust and betrayal. "Where We Belong" celebrates unity on the dancefloor, inspired by experiences at Berlin's KitKat club.
The EP's visual artwork, created by photographer Tina Dubrovsky, centers on the theme of mineral extraction, addressing current challenges facing Sami territories. The project weaves together diverse influences - from Berlin club culture to Sami traditions and personal experiences - creating a unique musical narrative in 'Klubbas'.
'Klubbas' is available now on all major streaming platforms.
