iDJa Presents: Šuvva EP
iDJa released his ambient EP Šuvva on Friday 6, 2025 – a unique journey through time and space.
The EP is a collection of experimental ambient tracks based on field recordings from nature and sounds from Sámi handicrafts.
– Šuvva is a beautiful Northern Sámi word. For me, it describes the whisper of the wind in nature, iDJa explains.
– The word captures the calm feeling of standing in the forest and hearing the trees rustle. Those are the feelings I wanted to convey with the record.
The music moves between nature and technology, featuring recordings from Okstindan in Hemnes, forests in Helgeland, Sámi duodji, and joik.
The recordings have been digitally processed into abstract soundscapes, shifting between the concrete and the abstract.
The EP is a result of new production techniques the artist learned while studying in Berlin. It is released independently, supported by artist development funding from the Sámi Parliament.
– It’s a unique journey through time and space—something even artificial intelligence can’t recreate.
The EP consists of six tracks:
-
Gáissáide – inspired by changes in mood and landscape.
-
Mearra – based on recordings from the Helgeland coast, featuring the sounds of waves and seabirds.
-
Áhčis – a personal track based on a joik the artist received from his father in his youth.
-
Rávdnji – built from sounds of duodji and inspired by the energies of nature.
-
Šuvva – a rhythmic chill track inspired by a unique trip to Japan in 2017, combined with field recordings from Sápmi.
-
Skábma – a minimalist ending inspired by the dark season in the north, built from time-stretched recordings of ice and diffuse joik performed by the artist himself.
iDJa has previously made a name with the club EP Klubbas and performances in Berlin, Prague, and at both Norwegian and Sámi festivals.
